Jean-Claude Carrière: Le charme discret de Jean Claude Carrière

Dastan is pleased to announce Jean-Claude Carrière’s exhibition titled "The Discreet Charm of Jean-Claude Carrière" at Dastan+2. The exhibition will begin on Friday November 8, 2019, and will be open for public viewing through November 22, 2019. This is the first exhibition of his work in Iran. It includes tens of drawings dating from the 1970s to more recent years. Through many years, Jean-Claude Carrière has extensively traveled Iran and has made numerous drawings inspired by the people he met, their everyday life and the sights he visited. This is a practice that he has pursued traveling to many other cities and countries in the world. Moreover, having enjoyed long-lasting friendships and collaborations with numerous influential artists, writers, directors, actors, and many others from various disciplines, he has made a plethora of portraits, shown in this exhibition, that work like memory capsules of his interactions and experiences. Jean-Claude Carrière (b. 1931, Colombières-sur-Orb, France) is a writer, novelist, screenwriter, an Academy Award honoree and one of the most internationally renowned individuals in contemporary cinema. Carrière has been a frequent collaborator with Luis Buñuel on the screenplays of Buñuel's late French films. He met Buñuel, whom he worked with for almost 20 years in 1963. Carrière and Luis Buñuel would collaborate on the scripts of nearly all the director’s later films. He also worked as a screenwriter with Daniel Vigne (The Return of Martin Guerre), Volker Schlöndorff (The Tin Drum), Andrej Wajda (Danton), Jacques Deray (The Swimming Pool, Borsalino), Jean -Luc Godard (Sauve Qui Peut (La Vie)), Louis Malle (Viva Maria), Jonathan Glazer (Birth), Miloš Forman (Taking Off), Jean- Paul Rappeneau (The Horseman on the Roof) and Atiq Rahimi (Synghé Sabour). His awards include an Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film, Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement and “Padma Shri” Award. In 2014, Jean-Claude Carrière received an Academy Honorary Award for lifetime achievement. As a novelist Carrière has written and published “La Controverse de Valladolid”, “The Mahabharata”, The Secret Language of Film” (among many more). He has also has written the book “The Force of Buddhism” with the Dalai Lama in 1994 and “This is Not the End of the Book” with Umberto Eco (2012). Within the timeline of "The Discreet Charm of Jean-Claude Carrière" exhibition, a number of programs have been scheduled to honor and discuss Carrière’s lifetime achievements, including “Night of Jean-Claude Carrière” organized by Bukhara Magazine (November 7, 2019) and a workshop by Cinema Museum of Iran (November 9, 2019).
